From late summer through the first frost, its abundant nectar serves as a critical fuel source for migrating Monarch butterflies, swallowtails, native bees, and skippers during a season when other food sources are scarce. Additionally, it serves as a host plant for several showy moth species, while remaining remarkably deer and rabbit resistant. This keeps its lush, triangular green foliage intact even under heavy browse pressure.
