We like to call chinkapin oaks “mule” oaks, mainly to help us remember the scientific name, but also referring to their hardy nature and tolerance of the poorest of sites. Everything about this species is tough, except their acorns, which are considered a delicacy to wildlife. Just ask the mice at our nursery, who have an uncanny knack for singling them out amongst our huge inventory of acorns in storage. We now have to over-winter our chinkapin oak acorns in mouse-proof containers. Did someone say chinkapin oak was a slow grower? We planted a few ten inch seedlings last June, and they were between five and six feet before the first frost!! Think of our chinkapin oaks as candy-corn feeder set to go off for two weeks straight, beginning in late October.

Mostly Pleased

Plants arrived when I wasn’t home and delivery service laid box on driveway in full sun on a 100F sunny day. I got home about 1hr later and immediately took them inside. I planted them in 7.5x12” containers the next day. I have them under 40% shadecloth and I water them daily. Due to the heat exposure on delivery day, I lost (3) of the (16). I’m happy to have the (13) survivors. They look good - perky and erect. They do however look too tall for the trunk size and amount of foliage. It appears that y’all grew them in a very dense spacing with possibly insufficient sunlight. I’m really not complaining - I’m pleased with the trees AND your company. I’ll be a return customer. Thanks. SP

Thanks for the honest review, Stephen. I see you are in a very hot and dry state in the south. Even with your shade cloth and watering, I recommend you order/plant from late fall-early spring for the best success, because they absolutely can get too hot and dry in the box when shipped in mid summer. The plants will also have a better root to shoot ratio during the fall and winter as well. Enjoy!
