Buttonbush has to be one of the most underrated or “not popular yet” plants on the market, but we’re here to change that. Part of the reason for its obscurity is that it suffers from identity crisis due to having so many local nicknames…some even shared with other species. How’s that for confusing?

Buttonbush is naturally found in backwater areas such as mud flats, beaver killed timber, slough edges, and mucky swamps that are usually too wet for other perennial species to establish and thrive, but will grow just about anywhere you plant it, including upland sites. It makes wonderful cover to protect ducks from predators, crappie absolutely love to spawn under them, bees utilize the flowers to make excellent honey, deer nail the new growth, and the list goes on.

Thanks to its super fast growing root system, buttonbush is a no-brainer to use as an erosion control and water quality tool, such as in stream bank stabilization and mitigation projects. Aside from the many wildlife and environmental benefits, buttonbush provides a long lasting, unique bloom display, and the glossy leaves show streaks and splotches of blood red color before dropping in the fall. So if you’re aiming for aesthetics, improvement, or both, you’ll get what you need with our buddy the buttonbush.

Excited, but the verdict is still out

I bought three buttonbush to plant as suggested, in a cluster, 12” apart to get a fuller effect. Right out of the box one did not look good. It has since died (after 10 days or so). #2 is struggling. Only # 3 looks great. I reached out to customer service, but no reply yet. I want to love these bushes as they’re hard to find. Hopefully, Nativ will send 2 replacements.

Hi Merideth-
Sorry i missed your email response! Yes we can absolutely get you replacements, but we'd prefer to ship them at a proper time (not in mid Summer). Our seedlings are pretty hardy, but with a 4 day ship point via UPS to your state from MS its not surprising a few didn't arrive in the best of shape. I'll touch base via email and we'll come up with a plan to ship you some extras when things cool off a bit. Thanks for the review!

The Button bush plants arrived safely and in great shape. They were so much larger that I expected so I was pleasantly surprised.

I ordered nine button bushes. They arrived quick and in excellent condition. Also happily larger than expected. They are thriving in the garden. Will order more native plants from Nativ Nurseries.

buttnbush

all 6 plants arrived and appeared in good shape. I planted all of them in a wet area. AS an experiment I placed 3 of them in individual tree tubes and the other 3 in wire cages to protect them from deer browse. Over the next year or two I"ll look to see if there is any difference in growth or survival.

In order to ensure our seedlings are delivered in the best shape we do not ship on Friday Saturday or Sunday. You may select a shipping date up to six weeks from purchase date at check out.
