As sweet as Tupelo honey, the black gum is one of our most attractive native trees. Also known as Black Tupelo, this tree offers a dense buffet of small black berries that are irresistible to songbirds and game birds alike. Most woodland critters enjoy munching on these mouth-watering treats as well. We have even seen our white-tailed friends browsing on the understory foliage. Not only is this tree great for wildlife, but its value as an ornamental tree is just as splendid. When fall comes around and the leaves begin to change, the shades of pale yellow, scarlet, deep purple, and bright red offer a brilliant array of stunning colors. When planting your new blackgum, keep in mind that this tree likes full or at least partial sun, and prefers to keep its feet dry (well-drained).
