Just received a dozen 2-3 foot tall American Beautyberry seedlings, and this was my second batch I purchased. I ordered a dozen of these a little over a year ago from Nativ Nurseries; all survived except two that were killed just below the soil surface, presumably by voles. All of the remaining 10 plants I got (which were beautiful 2 foot plus tall plants on arrival), are thriving and produced surprising numbers of berries in just their first year in the ground! I would recommend some type of protective screen or barrier around them and down into the soil a bit to prevent damage from moles/voles/chipmunks until they get large enough to tolerate some nibbles. But for $4.99 apiece, these seedlings are a steal! I have recommended them to numerous friends who also garden for wildlife. This September, the berries were picked clean by migrating warblers and vireos, a beautiful confirmation of this shrub’s utility in your backyard wildlife habitat!
