Swamp Sunflower is a preferred, early successional native perennial forb with a beautiful yellow late summer bloom we're huge fans for a multitude of wildlife, ecological, and ornamental reasons. If you want to add color while creating food, cover, nesting, brooding and insects for game and non-game species alike, this is one of the better choices. Cold tolerant in USDA Zones 5–9, this showy wildflower prefers full sun in areas that stay moist in the winter and spring months, but can also dry out in the summer. Depending on the site productivity and moisture, it will vary from 3 to 8 feet tall and and over time spread and form large areas covered with thick leaves that whitetails love to eat the tops out of. Another thing that is great about this species is it competes fairly with some of the other "good weeds," such as ragweed, partridge pea, showy tickseed (Bidens), goldenrod, and various asters to name a few.
From a pollinator standpoint, its late-season bloom provides a nectar source for butterflies and native bees when other food sources are drying up. They also serve as a larval host plant for several butterfly species, including the Silvery Checkerspot. As the plant goes dormant in the fall, the seed heads provide miniature sunflower looking seeds that quail, turkeys, doves, and a host of songbirds eat on in the cold months. What more could you ask for??
