We say that because it is easy to grow from zones 3-9, comes back every year, attracts insects and pollinators, has an outstanding purple bloom with a cone shaped seed head that’ll enhance any yard or meadow, makes free bird seed, and has medicinal value. There are many “cultivars” of coneflowers with odd shaped blooms and weird colors, but we much prefer to collect, grow, and share the true wild ones with our customers. The reason is the odd colors and weird leaves on most cultivars aren’t attractive to the very critters we are trying to attract, and the nectar may not be accessible for them to eat. We think it’s important to consider those things these days, and hope you choose to do the same.

You can plant purple coneflower plugs in somewhat poor to good soils with good drainage, and they can bloom the first year and every year thereafter. It “stands tall,” and the stem is “strong as iron” as the name suggests of its narrow and upright habit. It’s often found in flat areas that tend to hold some moisture, but will grow in just about any soil type if it’s provided with partial to full sun. In the late summer and early fall, the one foot wide purple to magenta cluster of blooms (called corymbose cymes) on top can be seen from a distance, because they seem to be glowing. The blooms are prime real estate for a huge list of pollinating insects. As you approach the 5’-8’ tall plants, its not uncommon to see several different species of wasps, bees, and butterflies competing for the nectar it provides.

Some of the pollinators and insects that visit ironweeds include: bee flies, skippers, bumblebees, painted ladies, monarchs, eastern tiger swallowtails, gall producing midges, borer moths, tiger moths, red groundlings, and katydids. Natural landscapers are beginning to recognize the value of this plant, and it mixes well with some of the later blooming native plants with differing flower colors. It’s also resistant to deer, cattle, and rabbits, so you don’t have to go through the trouble of protecting it. You can prune it back earlier in the summer to control its height to match the surrounding plants, and it will still bloom. Ironweed reproduces from seed and rhizomes, and is equally welcome in the pasture as it is in a pollinator garden in your yard.

Maximilian Sunflower Wildflower Garden Plugs

(Helianthus maximilliani)

Height 3-8’

pH 5-8

Zones 4-10

Soils: most common in prairie clays, but will also thrive in a variety of moist to dry soils.

Named for the German explorer/naturalist, Prince Maximilian, who led an expedition through the American West in the 1830’s, this native herbaceous perennial sunflower ranges in rich prairie soils mostly west of the Mississippi river from Texas to Canada, and east of the Rockies, but has naturalized elsewhere in the states. In the summer it forms a spike that is covered in the grass-like leaves that will grow up to 4 feet tall and when it blooms will be absolutely covered in tiny, bright, purple flowers (resembling a big bottle-brush) that are attractive to all types of moths, bees, butterflies, skippers, hummingbird moths, and hummingbirds. After the bloom, they produce seeds that attracts many songbirds including chickadees, titmice, buntings, and finches. Most often occurring in open or prairie type settings in the eastern half of the U.S., rattlesnake master is a perennial forb from the same family as carrots and parsley that has yucca like foliage, and spherical, spiky white to light green blooms that are dull in color but oddly stand out in a crowd of other plants. Several not so scientific references from the past link this species to different uses dealing with snakes… hence the name Rattlesnake Master. Don’t try this at home, but one suggested treating one’s hands with a concoction made from the plant could deter bites when handling rattlesnakes. Other cultures have used it to treat snake bites. Humans in the past and present use it for various ailments, but where it really shines in usefulness is that it makes excellent cordage and fabric. In fact, the oldest “shoes” found on archaeological sites in the eastern states are as much as 8000 years old and woven from fibers produced from rattlesnake master leaves.

Aside from its good looks and historical uses, rattlesnake master is also prized by many insects. Monarchs and other important butterflies and skippers utilize the nectar, certain beetles feed on its pollen, and many other native bees, wasps, and flies help with pollination. A couple of insects simply must have rattlesnake master plants to complete their life cycle.

Plant them in USDA planting zones 4-9 in open or mostly open areas so they get plenty of sunlight to reach their best size (blooms up to 4 feet in height).
